Outside dimensions describe the finished bag from edge to edge. Usable inside dimensions describe the space available for the product, usually below the zipper and inside the side and bottom seals. Buyers should name the measurement basis instead of sending only “width × length.”

Separate the finished size from the usable cavity

When I review a custom bag inquiry at XINYUAN, I want the buyer's dimension language to answer two different questions. First, what finished size must production control? Second, what clear space must accept the product? Those values are related, but they are not automatically the same.

The outside width runs from one finished side edge to the other. The outside length should have named endpoints, such as the top edge to the bottom edge. The usable width sits between the side seals. The usable length generally starts below the zipper or closure and ends above the bottom seal. A top lip above the zipper can increase overall length without increasing the product cavity.

This distinction matters because online catalogs and supplier drawings do not always use identical conventions. One seller may list a nominal size that means usable space below the zipper. Another may show the complete cut length. I therefore avoid assuming that a familiar size name has a universal meaning.

Which Bag Features Reduce the Usable Space?

A buyer may add clearance around the product yet still overlook the zipper track, side seals, bottom seal, lip, or an expanding gusset.

Side and bottom seals reduce the flat usable area, while the zipper and top lip define where filling can begin. Gussets add volume only after opening. Hang holes, tear notches, printing zones, and final sealing space can also restrict where the product may sit.

Mark every space-consuming feature

I treat the zipper as a functional boundary, not as a decorative line. If a rigid item reaches into the zipper track, the user may struggle to close the bag. If loose contents contaminate the track, the closure may also become difficult to operate. The drawing should therefore show the zipper position and the minimum clear product area below it.

Side and bottom seals also occupy material that the product cannot use. Their effect is especially important for a stiff, rectangular item because that item cannot flow around the seal area. A flexible or granular product may use the cavity differently, but a flat drawing still cannot prove actual fill performance.

If the bag has a bottom or side gusset, the buyer should not simply add the gusset number to the flat width. The gusset changes the three-dimensional shape after opening. Product thickness, corner shape, fill behavior, and closure clearance all affect the fit. A filled trial is more reliable than a volume estimate alone.

The exact allowances depend on the agreed bag construction, so I do not recommend copying an allowance from an unrelated bag. I recommend asking the manufacturer to label each boundary on the final dimensional drawing.

How Should Buyers Measure the Product and Test the Fit?

Product length and width alone may be too simple. Thickness, rigid corners, trapped air, fill variation, and packing speed can turn a paper fit into a failure.

Buyers should measure the product at its largest normal condition, include thickness and shape, add handling clearance, and test representative contents in a dimensionally correct sample. The test should cover insertion, zipper closure, removal, stacking, and the actual packing method.

Build the size around the real packing task

I start with the maximum normal product envelope rather than a single average item. For a rigid component, the buyer should measure the widest point, the longest point, the total thickness, and any sharp or projecting corner. For multiple pieces, the buyer should arrange the intended count exactly as operators will pack it. For loose contents, the buyer should define the target fill quantity and observe how the product settles instead of assuming that nominal volume predicts the bag shape.

The next step is handling clearance. An operator needs enough opening width to insert the product without stretching the film or scraping the closure. The filled product also needs to remain below the zipper so the closure can align. A larger clearance can make packing easier, but excessive space may allow unwanted movement, weaken presentation, or increase the shipping footprint. The right value comes from a physical trial rather than a universal formula.

Test the workflow, not only the empty bag

I recommend a short, repeatable fit protocol:

  1. Measure several representative products, including normal size variation.
  2. Pack the planned quantity with the intended orientation.
  3. Close and reopen the zipper several times without forcing it.
  4. Check whether corners stress the film or seal areas.
  5. Stack, carton, or display the filled bag as it will be used.
  6. Record the approved usable dimensions and sample version.

The RFQ and approval drawing should show dimension order, units, finished outside size, minimum usable size, zipper and lip positions, seals, gussets, opening direction, tolerances, product details, fill quantity, packing method, and the approved sample reference.

Create one controlled dimension record

I recommend using a dimensioned drawing as the controlling reference for quotation, sampling, purchase approval, and bulk inspection. The drawing should define whether the order is written width × length or another sequence. It should state millimeters or inches beside the values. If both units appear, one should be identified as controlling so rounding does not create two targets.

The file should also show where every length begins and ends. A label such as “usable length below zipper” is clearer than a floating arrow beside the bag. The zipper position, top lip, opening side, seal zones, gusset fold, tear notch, and hang hole should appear when applicable. The buyer should add an approved tolerance only after the manufacturer confirms what is suitable for the construction and production method. I avoid inventing one general tolerance for every PE ziplock bag.
