These are useful starting points, not fixed rules. A light liquid, thick paste, granular product, and refill concentrate will not leave the same pouch in the same way. A small pouch held with one hand also behaves differently from a large pouch supported with two hands or a handle. As the pouch empties, the flexible walls collapse and the grip can change.

Buyers should confirm the center or corner geometry with the equipment supplier or co-packer, including pouch orientation, fitment dimensions, rail or holder contact, nozzle access, cap placement, and discharge direction.

I ask buyers to identify the filling method before finalizing the spout location. Some programs fill through a pre-attached spout. Others fill through an open section of the pouch before the remaining edge is sealed. The machine or co-packer may already have a qualified handling system for only certain pouch dimensions, fitment positions, neck shapes, and cap formats.

A center spout and corner spout do not present the same centerline to a filling nozzle or capper. Their pouch bodies may hang differently when supported by the fitment. A corner layout can also require a defined left or right orientation. If artwork, coding, or carton loading depends on that orientation, the buyer must state it clearly.

Buyers should place the spout only after defining pouch dimensions, gusset, fill quantity, seal zones, headspace, handle, cap clearance, and artwork. The fitment weld area must remain compatible with the pouch structure, while graphics and required information need safe clearance around the final spout position.

I treat the spout, fitment weld, pouch film, and adjacent seals as one construction. A centered fitment interrupts the middle of the top area. A corner fitment uses one upper side and creates an asymmetrical top. The available sealing path, cap clearance, handling space, and pouch outline must all be reviewed on the same dimensioned drawing.

The filled shape matters as much as the flat shape. A flexible pouch changes profile when product enters it. The bottom gusset opens, the walls move outward, and the product level rises. If the spout sits too close to the filled product or another feature, the pouch may become awkward to cap, carton, display, or use. The buyer should therefore confirm the planned fill line for the spouted pouch before approving final coordinates.

Protect artwork from structural changes

A center spout supports a symmetrical front layout, but it can occupy a prominent top-center design area. A corner spout leaves more uninterrupted center space, yet it changes visual balance and may require separate left- and right-facing decisions. The artwork should mark the spout, weld area, seals, folds, coding zone, and any area hidden or distorted after filling.

What Should Buyers Test Before Approving the Spout Position?

An empty sample can confirm appearance, but it cannot show filling behavior, cap handling, pouring control, product residue, carton fit, or repeated user interaction.

Buyers should test representative filled pouches on the actual line and in the intended use. Compare filling and capping, leaks, grip, opening, pour control, dripping, evacuation, standing stability, artwork, coding, carton fit, and distribution handling before approving center or corner placement.

Run a side-by-side prototype trial

I recommend keeping the variables controlled. The center-spout and corner-spout prototypes should use the same agreed pouch size, product quantity, fitment family, cap, and film construction wherever possible. This makes the effect of position easier to observe. If several variables change at once, the team may attribute a better pour to the position when the real cause is the opening diameter, cap, or fill level.

The trial should include the people who fill, cap, inspect, pack, sell, and use the pouch. Operations may find a machine issue that a designer cannot see. A user may reveal a grip problem that a line engineer does not encounter. Purchasing also needs a record that connects the approved sample to the quotation and order.
